We are a local non-profit started by four busy A2 moms dismayed with the School District. We are laser-FOCUSED on finding the root causes of District dysfunction. We are here to ensure AAPS stays FOCUSED on academic and educational priorities.
Focus on Education Ann Arbor (FOEA2) is a non-profit organization committed to ensuring that Ann Arbor Public Schools (AAPS) uphold the highest standards of ethical educational governance for the betterment of the entire Ann Arbor community. FOEA2 advocates for transparent and responsible use of resources, prioritizing the most important educational and academic issues. FOEA2 aims to ensure equitable opportunity and unbiased, fact-based liberal education that is inclusive, allowing for all kinds of diversity, including viewpoint diversity, so that AAPS students develop into well-rounded, critical thinkers.
FOEA2 empowers its members to take an active role in local education through advocacy and administrative oversight. FOEA2 will be a District watchdog to ensure that AAPS lives up to our community's ideals.
In early January, 2024, a group of parents initiated a petition called “Focus on Education A2 BOE” opposing the BOE’s passage of a resolution on a highly controversial geopolitical matter wholly outside a local school board’s academic purview. Over 1900 members of the Ann Arbor community signed the petition imploring the resolution’s withdrawal. These 1900 individuals came from a cross-section of our community - from different backgrounds, ideologies, cultures, races, nationalities, ethnicities, and political leanings - with one thing in common, to insist AAPS FOCUS ON EDUCATION. Just a few weeks later, the BOE disclosed a shocking $25M shortfall which has now resulted in teacher layoffs and program cuts. We have seen division, dysfunction and total lack of integrity from BOE members. And that is why we decided to take the momentum started with the petition to establish Focus on Education, Inc., a 501(c)(4) non-profit organization aimed at holding AAPS accountable for the betterment of the entire Ann Arbor community. We must get Ann Arbor Public Schools back on track to embody true excellence in education for all students and community members. Every student, every family and every employee of the District is entitled to know that their leadership is FOCUSED on the things that are most important to ensuring excellence in education. We must ensure Ann Arbor Public Schools stay FOCUSED, that they do not sow division, but embody a truly diverse, inclusive and tolerant community that prioritizes the right things.
Better for All. Better for Good.
AAPS must live up to its reputation for fostering a diverse community. Ann Arbor schools must exemplify tolerance of all types of diversity to enable differing viewpoints that allow for deeper understanding of each other and the development of critical thinking skills.
Every member of the AAPS community must have the same opportunity to learn, grow and thrive in AAPS.
Every member of the AAPS community should feel included and comfortable bringing their whole selves to school without fear of exclusion, harassment or discrimination.
AAPS District leadership should exemplify good governance and ethical behaviors and must ensure that AAPS remains committed to the pursuit of truth and justice.
All AAPS students, staff and community members must be treated equally and be given the tools to succeed based on merit.

Sharon is the mom of two AAPS students and a full-time in-house lawyer. She is extremely passionate about improving K-12 education in her community. With her legal background, she is particularly concerned with improving district governance and ensuring AAPS provides top-notch civic education. Originally from the Detroit suburbs, she attended college in Indiana and law school here in Ann Arbor. She brought her family back to Ann Arbor in 2019 on the promise of raising her Jewish kids in a diverse, inclusive, liberal community with excellent public K-12 schools. Sharon is dedicating her time to Focus on Education A2 to ensure that AAPS lives up to that promise, that the Ann Arbor school board stops the insanity and gets back to focusing on our kids and their education.

Jenny, a Clinical Psychologist, has a daughter in preschool and a son who just finished 1st grade in AAPS. She runs a thriving private therapy practice and enjoys reading, listening to podcasts, and traveling. Jenny grew up in New York and spent many years in Philadelphia before arriving in Ann Arbor, a place she and her Husband were drawn to for its liberal and progressive values. She now feels like Ann Arbor is a second home where she has made wonderful friendships and connections. Inspired by her parents’ service in education while she was growing up - her mother as a school teacher for 38 years and her father as an elected Board of Education trustee in the K-12 district she grew up in - Jenny is excited to be a part of the non-profit organization, Focus on Education A2, to advocate for a return to civility, tolerance, true inclusivity, and acceptance of diverse beliefs and cultures within AAPS.

"Improving student outcomes through best practice should be at the forefront of the goals of school boards." - AAPS Parent and Former Teacher
"The School board should be discussing issues to better the educational system in Ann Arbor and that’s it." - AAPS Parent
"The AA School Board should focus on the many issues already on their table including but not limited to hiring a new superintendent, providing a safe environment for all students and staff, and providing education for all students including those with special needs, etc.” - AAPS Parent
"We have to rein this [financial issue] in and get back to the basics. Fiscal policy has been left out to dry. Actionable change and progress involve sound fiscal and budgetary policy. This is not up for debate." - Community Member
"I am a City of Ann Arbor resident with 3 children in AAPS. I am a member of the Jewish Community. I agree that our school board needs to focus on the Ann Arbor Public Schools not international issues." - AAPS Parent
"The two most important things a school board does is hold the Superintendent accountable and manage the budget. The current AAPS School Board has failed at both." - Elected Official
In the past 4 years, AAPS has lost 1,123 students!
At approx. $18k per pupil, that's a loss of approximately $20M.
So, we decided to ask families who recently left WHY and here's what they had to say...

"We moved our son to a private school because they were holding in person classes and aftercare and AAPS was not. Our son needed the in-person learning. We also needed to have our child at school with after-care so that our two-working parent family could make things work."
- AAPS Parent
"The focus of the school was to help kids that were struggling, while kids that were excelling were completely ignored. My daughter was asked to help other kids or just to read books. There were several sections of her grade and there could have been accelerated classes. It was a complete waste of time."
- Former AAPS Parent
“The academic standards in elementary and middle school are low. There are few challenges for children who wish to excel. For example, the pacing in math classes is very slow, there is little to no foreign language instruction until 8th grade, and English classes do not offer challenging or complicated literature to study.”
- Former AAPS Parent
"I have two children on the spectrum who were denied help because their test scores were high and they were academically meeting requirements. One was even denied accommodations. They struggled emotionally and socially and I received constant requests and “updates” from staff due to various situations, which took a toll on me. They need help to be mainstream and have much to contribute, but AAPS lacks the resources or understanding of their diagnoses. I will continue to follow what AAPS is doing closely."

"The way in which the board handled a ceasefire declaration was inappropriate and a wild misuse of school board time and energy. In addition, members of the school board posted their personal views on social media which opened the door for increased anti-semitism in our schools. It seemed as if the school board spoke for AAPS, who thus allowed anti-Israel and anti-Jewish sentiments to become publicly acceptable in schools. Jewish Heritage month was taken off the school’s calendar and a Jewish Parents Group application was deferred until the board could “decide on their standards” though they have not had a problem admitting or acknowledging parent groups before."

" Poor administration that goes back to before COVID. Multiple incidents of dishonesty of principal and Balas administration that go back to my oldest's first day of kindergarten. Dishonestly and refusing to follow science during COVID. Building leadership not supporting teachers. Lack of actual support for special needs kids and learning disabilities."

"We are a family of 3 elementary school aged kids zoned for Bach. We are well established and connected in the neighborhood both personally and professionally. Our oldest started at Bach in K in the Fall of 2019. We used the Rec&Ed before and aftercare offered at Bach in Fall 2019 (we used them part-time, of note, we also got to choose our days, knowing you had to pick a minimum of 2 days/week, and it was affordable). Mrs. Mary was AMAZING who was the head of the before and aftercare program at Bach and our oldest had a wonderful transition into elementary school and before/aftercare. We also had 2 little ones back in 2019 that were attending infant/preschool care right in the Bach neighborhood. We left AAPS in the Fall 2021 due to Bach Elementary not offering any before and aftercare. We stuck with AAPS and did virtual 1st grade with our oldest in Fall 2020. When looking at Fall 2021 our middle child was about to start K and oldest was about to start 2nd grade and Bach communicated to the community that they were starting the school year virtually for 2 weeks and then they said they would re-evaluate in-person schooling. Myself and partner both work and do not have any family support to assist with childcare for 3 young kids. We also did not want to look to hire a nanny d/t price and also they aren't as reliable as an in-school program. The Rec&Ed before/aftercare program that we used in 2019 at Bach was always open, never closed, and we never had to worry about staff not showing up for work. In Fall 2021 we knew with 2 working parents that cannot work from home, one being in healthcare, we had to make a switch. It was Fall 2021 that we moved outside AAPS to a private school that offers before and aftercare (drop off starts at 7am, pick ends at 6pm), no minimum days, and every student is allowed to attend both before and aftercare. To this day it's been such a sad, hard decision that we had to make, we love our neighborhood school, teachers, and principal. We would have never left had AAPS continued before and aftercare for 2 working parents. The cost of living in AA is so high and we have to have 2 working parents to be able to raise our kids in this community. It's sad because this Fall 2024 we would have a 1st grader, 3rd grader, and 5th grader at Bach but even now the before and aftercare programs make you choose either M/W/F or Tu/Th or 5 days for before/aftercare As a parent that works par-time I do not want to pay for the full week for 3 kids when I don't need before and aftercare for 5 days. For example, previously in Fall 2019 I paid for M/Tu/Wed (my work days). If we returned to Bach now with our 3 kids I would have to pay for 5 days of care based on the current before/aftercare offering. I can't afford to pay for 3 kids for full time before and aftercare when I only work part-time. It's frustrating because we had a program in the past that worked and supported working families where they got to choose their days with a minimum of 2 days/week. I'm acutely aware that our family alone is $30,000 ($10K per kid from the state) that the school no longer receives from the state but we had to make the hard decision to leave to support what was best for our family. Bach will always have our heart, we love this community!"
